New journalism degree is ready for students to take their seats

The University of Kent's new journalism degree is the first to receive industry accreditation before classes have even started.

The National Council for the Training of Journalists has recognised the new BA (Hons) in Journalism and the News Industry months ahead of its start in September.

The degree is based at the university's new Medway campus, around 30 miles from the main site in Canterbury.

It houses a state-of-the-art newsroom with courses tutors from national newspapers, magazines, web publishers, radio and TV programmes.

There are also professors with backgrounds in history, politics and law.

Tim Luckhurst, former editor of The Scotsman, is one of the course professors.

He said: "Excellent multimedia reporting, capable of winning the attention of the internet generation, is essential to the future of democracy, tolerance and prosperity.

"The centre for journalism will teach the highest standards of accuracy and professional ethics."

Multimedia working is at the heart of the course, with preparing content to be presented in print, on air and online. There will also be a practical work experience element included in the degree.
