One lucky journalism student could find themselves nearly £10,000 better off in three years time.

Liverpool Hope University is offering one applicant to their BA (Hons) in Film, Television and Radio degree a place for nothing.

The annual tuition fee of approximately £3,000 will instead be paid through a scholarship scheme run by the university in conjunction with Liverpool-based Radio City.

John McCarthy, Hope University's director of marketing, told holdthefrontpage: "We have teamed up with them to offer a student who lives in their transmission area a scholarship to the value of the full tuition fee – about £3,100 a year.

"We think it's great for us as an institution, the radio station thinks it's great for them and of course it's great for the student – it's a win-win situation.

"As far as we're aware it's the first one in the country."

Radio City's wide-reaching transmission area encapsulates greater Merseyside and parts of Lancashire and Cheshire.

Any student living in this area and who has applied for the September 2008 course is eligible.

John added: "This could be a life-changing opportunity for a student who would not otherwise go to university because they could not afford it.

"The course includes TV, radio and newspaper studies.

"They can do work experience with the radio station and we have connections with the Liverpool Post and Echo.

"We have decided to do it as we're seeking other partners for scholarships and also trying to get more employer engagement.

"People like Radio City are always on the look out for new talent."
