Echo helps African youngsters learn English

Schoolchildren thousands of miles away have been catching up with the news from an East Midlands county thanks a local daily paper.

Pupils at the Kakwale Community Day Secondary School in Kusungu, Malawi, were sent copies of the Lincolnshire Echo as part of a partnership project with the secondary school in Welbourn, near Lincoln.

Students at the two schools were put in touch with each other through the London-based charity Plan UK.

It is run by experienced teachers and aims to bring 2,000 schools in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the UK together over the next five years.

So far more than 300 schools in Kenya, Malawi and Sierra Leone have created links with UK schools through the charity.

The African students are using copies of the Northcliffe daily to improve their reading and English skills.
