Has email led to glut of press releases?

Journalists are being invited to take part in an online survey into the changing nature of press releases.

Iain Fleming, a former newspaper journalist who is now business development director of wire service Wirefast, is studying for a diploma in public relations at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh.

As part of his studies he is carrying out a survey into whether recent technological developments have led to changes in the type and volume of material sent to newsdesks by PR practitioners.

Questions covered in the survey include:

  • Has email increased the quantity of PR material sent to journalists, or is it just that the method of delivery has changed?

  • What percentage of PR material is delivered by email and what percentage by traditional methods?

  • Has the growth in media distribution services allowing content to be sent by email to journalists via a database contributed to a growth in press releases?

Iain is looking for as many working journalists as many possible to complete the survey and also forward the link to others.

Click here to take part in the survey.

Have surveys AND press releases led to a glut of unwanted and rapidly deleted e-mails? Yes!

I'd far prefer to spike (remember them?) "no interest" releases than miss one that had the germ of a story within it.
