Return to Sender campaign launched after post office blow hits London

The Times series of newspapers in west and north-west London has launched its Return To Sender campaign in response to a round of newly proposed post office closures.

Nineteen post offices have been targeted for closure in the newspaper group's circulation area.

Three years ago the Times series fought a battle to Save The Seven post offices earmarked for closure in the borough of Brent.

One of those seven was saved – but on Tuesday journalists and community campaigners discovered that it was included on the new list.

Lorraine King, now a Times series sub-editor, was the reporter who fronted the Save The Seven campaign.

She said: "Does the Post Office think people around here have amnesia?

"As well as trying to close the branch in Stonebridge again, they have named several others which were named as alternative branches to the ones closed in the last cull.

"It's time to roll up our sleeves and let the battle commence."

Editor Tim Cole said: "The number of post offices that have been shut down in each of our boroughs is now in double figures. Each time a post office closes the people who use it are told, ‘there's another one nearby'. That is no longer the case. Pensioners are having to travel miles to use what is still a very important public service.

"We are absolutely determined to make the case for each and every one of these post offices, some of which serve the most deprived communities in London.

"We may only save one, as we did three years ago, but it's our job to fight for our communities and that's what we will do."

Return To Sender will be covered by all the Times series publications which are the Willesden and Brent Times, Wembley and Kingsbury Times, Kilburn Times, Westminster and Paddington Times and Hammersmith and Kensington Times.
